George Smith licensed his remote Livet operation in 1824 after years of illicit distilling. Its success made the Glenlivet name so imitated that legal action was needed to protect the definite article.

The Glenlivet remains an operating Scotch whisky distillery at Ballindalloch, Moray. Its present identity joins the accumulated fabric of the site to an active production tradition, while discontinued bottlings belong to the range history rather than defining the distillery today.
