Distinct house style

Laphroaig is a forceful south-coast Islay malt recognised for medicinal peat smoke, seaweed, sweetness, and the character created by its floor maltings.
A portion of the barley is still floor malted and dried over Islay peat; the resulting medicinal, maritime smoke is carried through small stills and predominantly American-oak maturation.

History
From its beginnings
Donald and Alexander Johnston founded the distillery in 1815. Family stewardship, the influential tenure of Bessie Williamson, and a continuing attachment to traditional maltings define its history.
Laphroaig remains an operating Scotch whisky distillery at Port Ellen, Isle of Islay. Its present identity joins the accumulated fabric of the site to an active production tradition, while discontinued bottlings belong to the range history rather than defining the distillery today.

Identity
The character
Laphroaig belongs to Islay, but region is only a map reference. Its more informative identity comes from the production decisions above and from the way its spirit responds to maturation.
This distinction matters when reading a bottle: the distillery name identifies the origin of the spirit, while the expression, age, cask recipe and bottling strength describe the particular release.
